The process starts with how I set up the lights, pose you, and when I chose to capture a picture. To selecting the images, grading them, and then delivering you the final images edited with my hand. This is the whole process of my work. Any photographer. Much like a sculpture who selects a rock, studies it, and then shapes it until it is complete to their liking/ vision. The Raw images are much like the Rock as is. Or at most the rock with in general initial shaping - where you don’t know what is is yet but clear that work has started on it.
These are the images most people will not see. These are the images photographers do not give out. I do not deliver these to clients. I cull through the the RAW images which means I remove obvious images that do not meet my standards of work. These are the images created during our session. This is the blank canvas. These are the files I DO NOT SHARE since they are the beginning part, and only a part of, process that photographers do to create their work. What I am doing here is deleting the images that are obvious outtakes. This is called culling. I am narrowing down the amount of images that I know will are representative of my work AND reflect your essence and are images we are both excited about!
First Pass Foundation/ CONTINUITY
Grade each photo. Use simple controls to create my look across all images sent for preview. I use feeling to adjust my preset still but this is more about getting the images lifted.
After I removed images that do not meet my standards, I make the first full pass of images. During the first pass I am creating a continuity across the images by applying my foundational grading. This foundational grading is the start of my retouching style. Again, the whole process of capturing your headshots is half way done when the images we created together are uploaded into my computer. This is what I do before I send you the link for your online gallery. Consequently, what you view as “proofs” is the initial first layer of my retouching style
Creative pass
This is the nuanced pass. This is where the specific retouching such as blemishes, clean up backgrounds, and correct other aspect of the photos. More so, this where I do the retouching for your final images. This is when I start to use photoshop. There is more advanced color grading done, my artistic take on your essence and the overall image. This is what you hire me for: my interpretation. My final look. This is where I maintain your essence. Where you’ll notice I ensure you look like you with some creative freedom. This is where I don’t over smooth your skin and create beautiful picture. Instead, this is where I present you in a way that is interesting and lively (some of this is done during the photographic process). Also, a not so advertised aspect of shooting with me is that people usually walk away with images that are editorial in nature and are great as the “other” headshots where you can highlight your ability to model, or images that are great for you website and IMDB profile. Sure, they will be fun to share on social media too but I think you want to take people on a journey with you. In other words, you hand them your headshot and they want to learn more so they go to your website and SEE your same headshot AND MORE!! Show them the editorial images of you. The shots that are great images but not a primary headshot but capture your essence still and show them what else you can do and look. I do this because of my PR days.
